<itunes:subtitle>Jesus could heal people, walk on water, control the weather, multiply food, make wine, walk through walls, and wake the dead. Having such incredible abilities sounds amazing, but would it have been fun to be Jesus? Though there were moments of happiness and fun, the purpose of Jesus’ ministry was to tell people to repent and return to the Father, and many, including his own disciples, rejected and denied him. He knew that this would happen, but did not use his power to stop it. The things most worth pursuing in life (marriage, raising kids, having a deep spiritual life, etc.) are never going to be fun all the time, because love isn’t just fun and warm fuzzy feelings. The goal of life isn’t to have as much fun as possible before we die, it’s to live a life like Jesus, one that is centered on the love of God.</itunes:subtitle>

“We can argue on topics all day long, but if we don’t know the basic proclamation of the gospel and bring Christ to people, we’re not going to see much change at all. The one who can change their heart is the one who doesn’t change.”

Jeff offers some Scripture verses to help us better understand this concept and learn how to bring people to Christ first, so that they will choose to follow his commandments out of love, not just duty.

Snippet from the Show
“We can argue on topics all day long, but if we don’t know the basic proclamation of the gospel and bring Christ to people, we’re not going to see much change at all. The one who can change their heart is the one who doesn’t change.”

Jeff reminds us that if we feel unaffirmed or unappreciated, we will seek it somewhere—money, relationships, our work. In today’s episode, Jeff addresses several unhealthy ways we might be seeking validation and shares wisdom to help us find our true identity in Christ.</itunes:subtitle>

SHOWNOTES
*Quotes from the Show *
Matthew 19:5 - “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one.”
Prince: When Doves Cry - “How can you just leave me standing? Alone in a world that's so cold (so cold) Maybe I'm just too demanding. Maybe I'm just like my father, too bold. Maybe you're just like my mother. She's never satisfied (she's never satisfied). Why do we scream at each other? This is what it sounds like, when doves cry.”
John 12:42-43 - “Nevertheless many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.”
Matthew 20:1-16 - “For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place; and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing; and he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the householder, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you, and go; I choose to give to this last as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ So the last will be first, and the first last.”
How Does God Validate Us?
He Made Us In His “Image And Likeness” (Genesis 1:27)
Zephaniah 3:17 - “The Lord your God is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing”
*He Loves Us Even When We Sin *
John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
He Is Always On Your Side
Romans 8:31 - “What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who is against us?”
He Has Placed Us In His Family The Church
**
**God Commends Us, We Don’t Commend Ourselves
2 Corinthians 10:18 - “For it is not the man who commends himself that is accepted, but the man whom the Lord commends.”
Ultimate Validation Comes From God, Not Others
Proverbs 25:27 - “It is not good to eat much honey, so be sparing of complimentary words.”
*He Is Eagerly Waiting To Reward Us *
Matthew 6:16-18 - “And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

“We can only obey what we know. If we want to be obedient to God, we have to have some plan to get to know what’s expected of us. That’s what Bible study is about.”
SHOWNOTES
Matthew 20:20-28 - “Then the mother of the sons of Zeb′edee came up to him, with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. And he said to her, ‘What do you want?’ She said to him, “Command that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.’ But Jesus answered, ‘You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?’ They said to him, ‘We are able.’ He said to them, ‘You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.’ And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave; even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’”
Matthew 22:36-40 - “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.”
John 14:15 - “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
Romans 1:5 - “through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations”
John 1:6 - “If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth”
Luke 6:46 - “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?”
Luke 16:13 - “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
John 8:29 - “And he who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him.”

If the greatest commandment is to love God, how do we know if we’re actually doing it, or if we’re just falling in “like” with Jesus? To answer this question, Jeff uses Scripture passages on what it means to truly love God. He unpacks what this means for us as disciples who not only SAY they love Jesus, but ACT like they love Jesus.

Check out Jeff’s episode, Created for Love, Settling for Likes, for even more Scripture on this topic.

Snippet from the Show
“We can only obey what we know.

A go-to response to insomnia typically involves a snack and TV remote, but there are better ways to get real rest and wake up feeling refreshed. Jeff has some advice for those who have difficulty sleeping, and it all comes from Scripture!
The topic of sleep is a recurring theme in the Bible, and each verse in this episode provides an instruction about how to quiet the mind and get the rest we crave.
Snippet from the Show
Worry is where you pay today for something that could possibly happen tomorrow. It keeps us up at night. But Matthew 26:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.”
SHOWNOTES
Daniel 2:1 - In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnez′zar, Nebuchadnez′zar had dreams; and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep left him.
Psalm 121:3-4 - He will not let your foot be moved, he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
Matthew 8:23-24 - And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep.
Proverbs 6:9-11 - How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a vagabond, and want like an armed man.
Proverbs 20:13 - Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty; open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread.
Psalm 127:2 - It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.
Psalm 36:4 - He plots mischief while on his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good
Proverbs 4:14-16 - Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of evil men. Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on. For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong; they are robbed of sleep unless they have made some one stumble.
Matthew 6:25-27 - “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?”
Matthew 26:32-33 - For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.
Proverbs 3:24-26 - If you sit down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden panic, or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes; for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.
Philippians 4:6-7 - Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Psalm 91:1-5 - He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence; he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
The Lord sustains you
Psalm 3:5 - I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the Lord sustains me.
Psalm 4:8 - In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for thou alone, O Lord, makest me dwell in safety.
Honest day’s work
Ecclesiastes 5:12 - Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much; but the surfeit of the rich will not let him sleep.
Psalm 119:62 - At midnight I rise to praise thee, because of thy righteous ordinances.
Psalm 23 - The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want; he makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Matthew 11:28-30 - “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Snippet from the Show
“How will we pass on the Faith to the next generation? … Get a brand new Bible and take notes in it with your son, daughter, grandson, or niece in mind and give it to them as a record of your prayers, intentions, and hopes for them.”
SHOWNOTES
2 Peter 1:12-15 - “Therefore I intend always to remind you of these things, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to arouse you by way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. And I will see to it that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.”
John 14:27 - “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
